The GQ Experience

by Soforia the Enchantress

Hello Everyone!!!
I know how much we love to read and hear about what actually goes on behind the scenes.
So I thought I’d publish my recollection of The GQ Experience.

It began innocently enough with the email you see below.
With the exception of the author, *names changed to protect the innocent.

Hello; I'm a writer who has been asked by GQ magazine to do a story on erotic hypnosis. I wonder if I could talk with you on the subject. Should you wish to verify my credentials, my editor at GQ is *Stephanie Nelson, and GQ's number in NYC is 212-555-1212. Thanks. David Macfarlane

WOW - I thought! Is this for real? And look! It came in from the Hypnotic Wishes Website - Very interesting....No - I did not call his editor - but I was very interested in pursuing this. Why?
Because I was curious! More about My Curiousity later.

Will do. I'll try to get questions off within the next week. I expect to be travelling throughout US in the fall, researching this. And so it would be a great pleasure to meet with you then. David

Thanks. More questions will occur to me, I'm sure. But here are a few initial ones.

(1) Do you have any way of gauging the size of the "erotic hypnosis community." I expect this is impossible, but GQ will want to know that we're not talking about a small number of people here. Also, do you sense that this community is growing? Coming out into the open more?

(2) I'm interested in the basic question of hypnosis. Are there trances and trances? Will a man, under the erotic influence of a hypno-domme be in as "real" a trance as, say, a woman hypnotized by a hypnotherapist for childbirth, for instance.

(3) Is there a difference between pretending to be hypnotized -- ie acting out a fantasy of being hypnotized by a beautiful woman -- and being hypnotized. Here I'm touching on the "all hypnosis is self hypnosis" idea. If I say to myself, I'll pretend to be under your power (because it turns me on) am I really hypnotized? But just think I'm pretending?

(4) Is it accurate to describe erotic hypnosis as domination and submission but without the ropes and whips. Mental S&M?

(5) How much of what you do is simply giving permission to people to do what they secretly want to do anyway. If I want to wear women's lingerie, but am ashamed to do so, do I go to someone like you, to be hypnotized and ordered to wear it?

(6) And, finally (for now) what percentage of your clients see hypnosis as a way to get to their fantasy -- meaning that you help them envision that fantasy more vividly than they might be able to on their own. If I want to be seduced by Rita Hayworth in Gilda's black satin gown can you make me see that more vividly than I could conjure it myself. Or is it something else -- I want to get hypnotized because that is the fantasy: that hypnosis isn't a means to a fantasy, but an erotic kick on its own?

Best wishes,

David

Hi; One other question. Do you know of the existence of hypno-clubs, or gatherings anywhere in the US? Do enthusiasts of erotic hypnosis get together -- in the way that S&M fans do? Fetish nights, etc. Are there S&M, or D&s clubs where erotic hypnosis plays a role? Best wishes, David

Here's yet another question. One that occured to me yesterday. Many fetishes have a long history. S&M, for instance, goes back to the Victorian era, and beyond. But hypno-fetishism strikes me as being a relatively new phenomenon. Do you have any knowledge of a tradition linked to this particular enthusiasm. David

VIA EMAIL 07/31/01
Interviewer: David Macfarlane
Interviewee: Soforia the Enchantress AKA Lady Supre Macy

Q. Many fetishes have a long history. S&M, for instance, goes back to the Victorian era, and beyond. But hypno-fetishism strikes me as being a relatively new phenomenon. Do you have any knowledge of a tradition linked to this particular enthusiasm?

A. This particular fetish seems to be partly media driven with specific reference to the 1945 movie, "The Woman in Green", a Sherlock Holmes movie with Hillary Brooks as the evil female hypnotist. Comedic references include, Bob Hope in one of the "Road" movies. Other media favorites include, Shirley Eaton as Sumuru, in the movie, "The Million Eyes of Sumuru", and the fiction work by Sax Rohmer, "The Sins of Sumuru" on which the movie is based. One of my particular favorites is a movie called Terror from the Year 5000, in which the female from the future is hypnotizing her male victim with her fingernails. This one is very "campy". For more information on media, refer to the website, www.hypnosisinmedia.com by Terry O’Brien. He is not such a fan of what we call FemDom Hypnosis but his site is a good reference.

A. I don’t know of any specific gatherings. Sometimes people plan an informal get together. Occasionally the "leather" groups have hypnosis demonstrations. I would suggest taking a look at some of the Yahoo clubs you can find by doing a hypnosis search. I have a !Yahoo group, called soforiashypnoticsilkenweb, which is a mailing list I run. !Yahoo is a bit funny about adult material. After they announced they were going to promote adult material, there was a huge backlash that caused them to swing to the right a bit and eliminate certain adult material. Part of my geocities website was eliminated because of this new "sensitivity" My AOL website had also been previously deleted, as well as a website I had with a UK provider. My site didn’t even come close to 95% of the material out there that is now bordering on pornography. Mine was simply about hypnosis and mind control. See www.hypnoticsilkenweb.com that is like my original AOL website. I’ll have www.soforia.com up soon. Another domain name I acquired is ladysupremacy.com, (which I'll link to soforia.com. Another great site is www.mcstories.com. Again, the webmaster is not into FemDom hypnosis as much as he enjoys mind control.

Q. Do you have any way of gauging the size of the "erotic hypnosis community." I expect this is impossible, but GQ will want to know that we're not talking about a small number of people here. Also, do you sense that this community is growing? Coming out into the open more?

A. I believe 1 in 20 persons is a hypnofetishist. Some lean the other way away from their curiosity and actually fear hypnosis. The rest give in to their Hypnosis Fascination. Yes, the community grows larger everyday as people still write me and tell me, they thought they were the only one who felt this way.

Q. I'm interested in the basic question of hypnosis. Are there trances and trances? Will a man, under the erotic influence of a hypno-domme be in as "real" a trance as, say, a woman hypnotized by a Hypnotherapist for childbirth, for instance?

A. Yes, there are "trances" and "trances". But as you remember desire and intense imagination are at the bottom of a hypnofetish, realize that this same desire and imagination is what motivates others to seek out hypnosis as a complimentary medicine. I think most people agree that we become what we think about, don’t you?
If you accept the basic definition of hypnosis (Hypnotherapy, by Dave Elman) to be, "the bypass of the critical faculty of the mind whereby selective thinking is established", then it follows that hypnosis is hypnosis is hypnosis, but trance is another matter, for there is depth of trance with specific physical manifestations, such as noted in the Stanford Depth Test, or as Dave Elman states: 5 characteristics of hypnosis, body warmth, fluttering of eyelids, increased lacrimation, whites of eyes getting red, eyeballs going up into head. Now, how do we translate these physical signs into a telephone session? We can’t! so we have to use all of our senses to determine depth of trance. which is typically deepen, deepen, deepen. Realize that our clients can talk to us and we can determine by how they talk, how they breathe how they respond. Etc. Can this be faked? Sure! But why would they waste their money and my time to fake this. If I realize someone is a role-player, I typically won’t work with him or her again.
It is just not as satisfying for me.

So the answer is yes, the man hypnotized by a hypnodomme is in as real a trance as a woman in hypnosis for childbirth. By the way, a few of us are professionally trained Hypnotherapists who do have clinical therapy practices.

Q. Is there a difference between pretending to be hypnotized -- i.e. acting out a fantasy of being hypnotized by a beautiful woman -- and being hypnotized. Here I'm touching on the "all hypnosis is self hypnosis" idea. If I say to myself, I'll pretend to be under your power (because it turns me on) am I really hypnotized? But just think I'm pretending?

A. As mentioned above, some "fake", but realize that the use of "pretend" is an effective way to induce trance.

It is how we work - therapeutically with children. For you, when I turn the right key in your mind, even though you may believe you are "only pretending", you would be hypnotized. For as soon as I suggested that you were unable to move your legs as though they were in bondage and if you "pretended" you were unable to move your legs, then as you test them, you would find you were actually unable to move. BUT, if you decided in that split second to move them, you would simply be proving to yourself that you were still in control. The body is merely a robot and responds to what the mind believes. Say you drop your pen and I suggest to you to TRY and pick up the pen as long as you were trying to pick up the pen, you would be unable to pick up the pen. Once you stopped trying .. you would either pick up the pen or you wouldn’t. As Yoda said, and very Zen like, I might add "There is no try" there is only do or not do. It is like this: it is a combination of your free will and my * Hypnotic Spell *. My spell makes it easy for your free will to rationalize that you are doing what I want you to do because you want to do it.

Q. Is it accurate to describe erotic hypnosis as domination and submission but without the ropes and whips. Mental S&M?

A. Yes, but not necessarily as S & M – which is sadomasochism. I have no desire to inflict pain on people – Though sometimes I do because I know they need/want it…. Preferably, I would work to help them overcome that need for self-punishment but only if that is what they want. In my opinion, the whole basis for self-punishment is the hypnotic messages we receive while growing up but that is another article and, only, my humble opinion. Now days, some pro-dominatrix are learning more and more about hypnotism, because they know it can enhance a client’s submission and openness. In the past, the pro-dommes have shied away from hypnosis- probably out of fear of the unknown. BUT people want to feel more these days – the media and the politicians are already hypnotizing us so that most of us just turn ourselves off from really feeling anything these days. More likely, erotic D/s Hypnosis helps de-hypnotize us from the mind numbing effects of mass media. By the way – you do know, most church pastors use covert hypnotic techniques when they give their sermons, don’t you?

Q. How much of what you do is simply giving permission to people to do what they secretly want to do anyway. If I want to wear women's lingerie, but am ashamed to do so, do I go to someone like you, to be hypnotized and ordered to wear it?

A. I liken hypnotic domination and submission to having a couple of social cocktails…. Loosens up the inhibitions. And yes, you could do just as you said.

Q. And, finally (for now) what percentage of your clients see hypnosis as a way to get to their fantasy -- meaning that you help them envision that fantasy more vividly than they might be able to on their own. If I want to be seduced by Rita Hayworth in Gilda's black satin gown can you make me see that more vividly than I could conjure it myself? Or is it something else -- I want to get hypnotized because that is the fantasy: that hypnosis isn't a means to a fantasy, but an erotic kick on its own?

A. Both! That’s the good news! Some want to vividly experience a personal fantasy and some want to experience hypnosis because, in their belief system, hypnosis itself is inherently erotic.

I think N.... has told you this, but it looks as if the 3 of October will be when I come to you. I'll drive down from LA that morning if that's convenient. Now how should we best do this? It would be useful for me to meet you, the hypnotherapist, and to discuss erotic hypnosis with you from that perspective. But also to encounter you as Soforia, and to experience her as well. (Confidentiality will be guaranteed -- locales and names and any other identifying factors can be changed.) I'm not certain how you feel about taking on both of these -- especially in the course of a single day. I don't want to take up too much of your time. But I suppose from my point of view, the best arrangement would be a formal interview with you, the hypnotherapist. And then, later, a separate encounter with Soforia. For purposes of the story, I can imagine the encounter being a journalist calling on Soforia for an interview but, as the interview gets going, being hypnotized instead. Don't ask me how we explore the erotic implications of my being hypnotized, but I guess that's would be the point. And, by the way, I'm quite prepared to pay for the "session" with Soforia if you think that's appropriate. On the other hand, if you would prefer to have me simply interview you, the hypnotherapist, or you as Soforia, let me know. That's fine, too. Thanks for your help. David

We had discussed a dual meeting like this - but we simply ran out of time.....
The whole point of having an experience with Me is to have something different than what happened to the last client or the next client. Sometimes I follow a similar path to a training goal, but in most instances, different events occur with each individual..as you read on and get to the part that we are sitting at the dinner table- realize - before I moved the candle - that I had no clue as to what was going to happen - I knew I wanted to hypnotize him right there- but was I going to use a prop? - or My Eyes? - My Pendent? - My Voice? - and once I had him hypnotized - what was I going to do with him......it is almost always spontaneous with Me!

Subj: Re:

David,
I have been giving it a great deal of thought, and, it seems to me since we have time, that you should embark on this mission as though you were actually just starting out in your quest for truly melting into a deep hypnotic trance! My preference is for clients to begin a conditioning program prior to our fist session together..particularly if the person is coming in from out of town for the express purpose of having a session with me. Therefore, it makes sense for you to do as they do...which is to obtain a few of my recordings. As you are going through the process, I will be happy to share with you and editorialize on the why, if you like. So, begining now, as I go through what I call an initiation process with a potential client, I give them some small suggestions and requests for them to do certain things....to get them more fully prepared, psychologically, to accept stronger suggestions/commands from me later.
You can easily obtain some of my recordings from www.MP3.com/soforia and begin to get acquainted with my style by listening to the samples and ordering the "Basic Induction" I highly recommend that you bring it on the road with you as it is very helpful in assisting with deep sleeping the road as well.

One other thing, in order for you to more deeply understand what I consider a media driven fetish, you might want to obtain and view a video of the 1945 Sherlock Holmes movie entitled,"The Woman in Green" starring Basil Rathbone. This is most certainly one of the most covertly erotic of all "hypnosis" movies.

Hypnotizing & Enchanting you Always,
Enchantress Soforia
Mistress of Deep Hypnotic Sleep

Thank you for the tip re. Woman in Green. Amazingly, I was able to see some of it on the web, on a site called Like television. I think I saw the hypnosis scene to which you refer. The flowers in the water? I'm quite interested in pursuing this idea of a media inspired fetish, as I've already been struck by how many people refer to scenes in horror movies, sci-fi etc, that they came across by accident at an impressionable age. I see, for instance, that one of the stories on your web-site refers to Dracula's Daughter -- which I have seen. David

It was right around this time period that David had a phone session with Me. It is always wonderful to work with new clients and David did want to experience the "client" side of hypnosis as well as be able to write about - I have to admit that his natural right-brained-ness made him a joy to hypnotize. He responded very well to the phone session as we continued on as though he were a new client - much like the frog in the pot of water papetjames refers to in his musings.

Hello there!
I'll be mailing your package on 04 Sept. so you can gauge its arrival. What is your complete travel schedule?
I know we are getting together Oct. 3rd. in the afternoon??? as you said you were driving down from LA after seeing Krystal on Oct. 2nd. You were also going to be in Denver to see whom again?
And to talk to see Look Deeply ....

Great feedback on the request to tell me about yourself.
Have you read Corporate Package yet?
Am I fishing for a compliment from a professional writer?
Well, maybe.

The afternoon and evening would be better for me.

I wrote the first chapter - and Liplover was primary writer of 2, 3, & 4. The concept of the capture and most of the details were mine..I let him do most of the writing - and I let him have some leeway involving his make - up fetish.

And here is an excerpt of the GQ article...

"......Soforia has a soft, smooth, voice. Hers tends a little more toward the domme than hypno. Still, listening to it - listening to it for several hours-proves a surprisingly nice thing to do.

As ordered, I become very very relaxed. My breathing is regular. And, indeed, my eyelids become too heavy to keep open. I do what I am told.

.......She asks me whether I've ever given any thought to how lovely the flame of a candle can be. The candle on our table, for instance... Half an hour later, I'm back in my hotel room, stretched out on my bed. I may as well be tied up, since I am unable to move."

GQ-cover

Hypno-enthusiasists have taken the Svengali-inspired netherworld of science fiction, horror films, comic books they encountered as kids and built a feticsh on the mysterious impact of that childhood experience. In *Martin Knight's case, the moment occurred one day in 1959, when he was in ihis parent's living room watching the Movie Missle to the Moon on television.
*His name has been changed for this article.*

(For Me, Soforia, that moment came while watching "Terror from the Year 5000". I must have been about 11 or so at that time I knew than that the ability to hypnotize a man was very valuable indeed. In fact, I hypnotized my first boy when I was in fourth grade - he was chasing me around the playground at school - trying to kiss me! Suddenly I turned on him and said "FREEZE" . He did just that - completely unable to move a muscle.....))

Hypnosis can facilitate control..............Having uncovered a secret--something the man has told no one else, ever: a foot fetish, a need to dress like a little girl--the erotic hypnotist is then invested with enormous power by her client. She controls him not only with her hypnotic skills but wishes. Being instructed by a female hypnotist to wear, or to imagine wearing, women's clothing is probably the most common fantasy in this regard.

When I arrive at a hotel in Orange County, California, for my interview with Soforia the Enchantress, a package is waiting for me at the front desk. It contains four of Soforia's CDs, as well as a handwritten note. The letter is not a greeting, but a page of instructions as to how I will spend my afternoon. CALL MY CELL PHONE AS SOON AS YOU CHECK IN. LEAVE YOUR ROOM NUMBER ON MY VOICE MAIL. I wonder if this is she routine for visitors who come great distances to be hypnotically bossed around.

Some men are so intrigued with the idea of being hypnotized into groveling submission that they will order Soforia the Enchantress's hypnotic CDs, "Blissful Obedience", "The Sound of My Voice", and "Snap to It!", and listen to them dozens of times, in part because Soforia tells them that is what they are going to do.

"I know you crave to be hypnotized by Me," She commands. And, in fairness to Soforia, She is telling Her to crave the sound of Her voice only partly because it improves business. The other element of this somewhat convoluted equation is that being ordered to crave Soforia's voice is exactly what Her submissive clients want to hear.

.........Soforia has a soft, smooth, voice.

When I meet Soforia in the lobby at six, it is, I have to say, a little weird. She's a solid, pleasant looking woman, neatly and conservatively dressed. She has something of the look, posture, and manner of a girls' basketball coach about her--a kink that would be a bit of a stretch for me. Probably , there is a good deal of interest in submitting to a woman who knows when to pass and when to shoot and when, precisely, to call a time-out. The only outward indication of her exotic vocation is the crystal pendant around her neck.

???????????????????????????????????????

..............She asks me whether I've ever given any thought to how lovely the flame of a candle can be. The candle on our table, for instance... Half an hour later, I'm back in my hotel room, stretched out on my bed. I may as well be tied up, since I am unable to move. On the hotel bed I realize I cannot lift even a finger from the bedspread. I may as well be gagged, since I cannot speak. I am in a trance again--If indeed I'd ever been out of trance since the afternoon when I listened to Soforia's custom CDs. The only difference this time is that the owner of the voice I've had ringing inside my head for hours, is actually sitting on the other bed in my hotel room, reading through my notebook.

She's what??? I think to myself. Until I realize that nobody can read my notebook! The handwriting is indecipherable. Apparently Soforia has arrived at the same conclusion. The next thing I know, I'm sitting up, reading my private notebook to Soforia.

I'm what??? I think to myself. Until I realize I haven't yet had a chance to go over my notes from my encounters in L.A. with Krystal Mesmer. This may be a good opportunity to review, I decide.

This is the classic rationale of the hypnotized subject [I'm not really hypnotized, but I may as well go along with what the hypnotist says"].

Soforia wants to know what happened next! I can't blame her. I am more than a little curious myself. But there is a problem; a frustrating gap in my notebook at this very juncture. My notes are full of frustrating gaps. It is their most consistent quality. But Soforia is not as familiar with my ineptitude as I am. She's not at all willing to let the discretion of a gap remain unexamined! She insists on knowing exactly what happened when Krystal hypnotized me and instructs me to recall the entire session in graphic detail!

Frankly, I think Soforia's curiosity trespasses on my hard boundaries. But what I decide to do, rather than simply refuse to obey Soforia, is to see if I can make things up while I am hypnotized. I'm curious to find out if this is possible.

It occurs to me, as I spin my story for Soforia--describing the candles, the scent of the perfume, the intensity of Krystal's hypnotic gaze, the seductive temptation of submission--that I should write it down someday. It is only much later, long after Soforia has gone, when I wake up in a dark hotel room and listen to the distant drone of traffic on the California interstate, that I wonder if I am certain I made my story up...
